About Patrisse Cullors
Patrisse Cullors, a community activist, was born to Cherisse Foley in Van Nuys, California, on June 20, 1984. After graduating from Grover Cleveland High School in Reseda, California, she attended the University of California, Los Angeles for her B.A. in religion and philosophy. Cullors also studied at the University of Southern California’s Roski School of Fine Arts and Design. Cullors became a member of the Bus Riders Union in 2001, a Los Angeles-based advocacy organization. Later, she started the coalition Dignity and Power Now to stop police abuse. STAINED: An Intimate Portrayal of State Violence, Cullors’ first performance art production addressing the violence of mass incarceration, debuted in 2012. The following year, Cullors completed a fellowship at the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership, and she prepared and oversaw a think tank on state and vigilante violence for the Without Borders Conference. Then, in 2013, she co-founded the #BlackLivesMatter movement. The first of a series of theatrical productions, POWER: From the Mouths of the Occupied, was another project she developed and directed.
Cullors gave the opening remarks at more than a dozen schools and universities in 2016, including American University, Cornell, The University of Notre Dame, and The University of Pennsylvania. In 2018, she expanded her Los Angeles-based coalition work with the advocacy organizations Justice L.A. and Reform L.A. Jails, as well as coauthored her New York Times bestseller memoir, When They Call You a Terrorist: A Black Lives Matter Memoir. 2018 saw Cullors accept a position as an adjunct lecturer in the Social Justice & Community Organizing department at Prescott College.
She was recognized in 2006 by being given the Mario Savio Young Activist Award. Google gave Cullors the Justice Teams for Truth and Reinvestment grant for racial justice in 2015. Cullors also won the Sydney Peace Prize for her work on the #BlackLivesMatter movement and was chosen by the Los Angeles Times as a civil rights leader for the twenty-first century. The Rosenberg Foundation named Cullors a Leading Edge Fund Fellow in 2016, MomsRising designated her a Senior Fellow for Maternal Mortality, DLG Media dubbed her a Kick-Ass Woman of Color, and the AFL-CIO Executive Council Committee on Civil and Human Rights gave her the Defender of the Dream Award.
She has also received the Glamour Women of the Year Award for The Justice Seekers, the National Center for Lesbian Rights’ Justice Award, the Revolution Award for Freedom from ImageNation Cinema Foundation, the Community Change Agent Award from BLACK GIRLS ROCK!
